The HSE has just launched a dedicated Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME) webpage for healthcare professionals. This may sound like a small thing, but for people living with ME, it is important.
For years, many people with ME have had to explain their illness, symptoms and limitations to healthcare professionals themselves. Having ME now specifically included within HSE information for healthcare workers means there is an official HSE resource that recognises ME and provides healthcare professionals with information about the condition.
That matters because recognition and understanding are essential first steps towards better healthcare.
It also gives people with ME something important to point healthcare professionals towards, i.e., an HSE source of information about ME.
This webpage doesn't solve the many problems people with ME continue to face, and its existence doesn't automatically mean that care will change overnight. But it is a significant development and, hopefully, a foundation that can be built upon.
For a condition that has so often been misunderstood, dismissed or poorly understood within healthcare, seeing ME explicitly recognised on the HSE's healthcare-worker website matters.
